Dear all,
It's been a long time since I have written to you. I have been very busy and time has flown so quickly. Many things have happened since I have last written to you.
My dear assistant Desak had a baby. Desak has been living with me already 14 years and we have been through many things together. We started a candle business, then a jewelry business and finally built the yoga studio. Without her support it would have been much harder to build the studio, but thanks to her devotion and her beautiful heart the studio manifested. She is like a daughter to me and consequently, her baby is like my grand-child. She also got married last
year and her husband is now living with us. I often have heard people say, I have not lost a daughter, I have gained a son. I understand now what this cliché means. The arrival of Ngurah has brought a very new and positive energy in my life and I just love having him around. Soon, we will have another addition to our family. Ketut, my other assistant who has also been living with me for 13 years has a son who has been living with her brother. When Ketut first came to live with me, she had just lost her husband while pregnant. Now Ketut rejoices because her son who is now 13 years old will be living with us too. My family is getting bigger. It's a gift from God. I am so grateful. I am the matriarch and I love it.
Some of you may have heard that my grand son Gustu was sick but through the grace of God he is much better now. Please visualize the baby happy and healthy.
You might have noticed that I have lost of lot of weight during the last 6 months. Last November, I did a yogic cleansing and stopped all refined sugar. As a result I have lost of lot of kilos. My purpose was not to loose weight but to be relieved from menopausal discomfort. Cutting off sugar has really helped me in that respect.
I love myself at my present weight but loved myself just as much before. It is very interesting to observe the reaction of people. I have had so many congratulations as it was the greatest accomplishment. This experience has given me much more compassion for those who battle with their weight. It must be so hard when one gains the weight back because when you loose weight, many people treat you as if you are a new improve version of yourself. For someone who is looking for approval it must feel like a major failure.
Medias, fashion, cosmetics and diet industries make women believe that their bodies are unacceptable and need constant improvement. This is not true. All bodies are beautiful. It is important to accept and respect the natural diversity of body sizes and shapes. What is up this tiny ideal body? Too often women get lost in their quest of an unachievable, unrealistic standard of female beauty. Each of us has an ideal healthy body weight for optimal physical and mental health and a good quality of life. Beside we are more than our body.
As we get older, our body changes and yet we don't really feel any different. The witness of our aging process doesn't feel different. That is because we are not our body. The body is the temple of our spirit as well as a tool to experience life through our senses. The most important is to feel good from inside out. What is the value of looking young if you experience arthritis; burn out, fibromyalgia, etc. Practicing yoga daily teaches us to age with serenity. It balances our energy, makes us more flexible, lengthens our spine, corrects our posture, tones our muscles and prevents stiffening of our body and mind, reduces inflammation and heals our joints, detoxifies our body and helps us control our weight, reduces stress and helps us to relax. But more importantly it teaches us self-awareness, compassion for one self and connects us with the divine.
Let's be grateful to our body for the work is has done so far for you. Because truly, having a healthy body is true gift.
Starting for today, I am leading a 6-day retreat here in Bali . After that, I am taking some time off from teaching. I will go back to the western world for a whole month. During that time, I will attend a training at Kripalu called: 2010 Yoga Therapy Intensive: Skill Building for Professionals with teachers such as Nischala Joy Devi , Bo Forbes , Devarshi Steven Hartman , Gary Kraftsow , Judith Hanson Lasater , Dana Moore , Larry Payne , Priti Robyn Ross , Mukunda Stiles , and Bessel van der Kolk . The rest of the time will be spend with my family and friends in Canada . It's been a long time since I have taken time off, 17 months as a matter of fact and I am looking forward to be in the West again.
Anoshe a wonderful woman from Holland will be covering for me while I am gone. Born in Amsterdam , Anoshe took her first yoga and meditation classes when she was 19 years of age. Besides yoga, she has studied dance, many forms of moving meditation, including tai chi, and the classic Indian dance, Bharat Natyam in India . She has performed dance improvisation for Janis Claxton and Co, a renowned choreographer in the UK , and worked with her closely in several Dance of the Goddess retreats.
In 1990, when she won an air ticket to India in a raffle, Anoshe's life changed dramatically. She stayed with several spiritual teachers on her inner quest, before she met her Indian teacher with whom she traveled through Kashmir, the Himalayas and around the world, participating in long silent retreats and came to understand the profound effect of silence and meditation which enhances her yoga classes in our busy chaotic world. Anoshe feels that yoga is a perfect technique for her students to become "the center of their cyclone"… to simply be free and feel relaxed.
Having lived in Byron bay, Australia since 1991, she is a mother of a two and a half year old daughter as well as being a fully certified yoga teacher through Yoga Arts, trained directly by Louisa Sears. Anoshe's dynamic vinyasa flow classes are not only a dynamic work-out, but also an invitation to align body-mind-spirit and explore being present in the moment as it presents itself.
I am very happy to leave the space in her care.
In peace and light,
Linda
